Raising sponsorship for the Farmers Cricket Club

Earlier in the year, and amongst the uncertainty of my current position coupled with the existing Covid-19 restrictions I was approached and asked if I could help out the Farmers Cricket Club in a Business Manager role to engage with past, existing and potential sponsors with a view to raising funds for the club.

The Farmers Cricket Club in Jersey is a great club with a superb facility that aside from competing in regular league and cup competitions is used to host ICC competitions, but as a private sports club in Jersey does not receive government funding. There is a good core of volunteers who all do there bit, and a dedicated ‘owner’ and chief groundsman in Jimmy Perchard, but funds are essential to keep the club operating.

I deliberated over the request for a short while, before embracing the opportunity to reconnect with business professionals in the Island and to tell them my story as well as working on sponsorship proposals. As has been well-documented, whilst some industries and companies have suffered, there are others that have thrived over the last twelve months and are keen to help.

The starting point was to make a list of all advertising boards in situ, and to review the facilities and consider what could be ‘sold’, including not only physical advertising space but also mentions, kit and social events.

The response has been great, and I’m delighted that income is already up by more than 100% on 2020, I am still working on a number of potentials and the season is only just beginning. Covid restrictions are easing and I am hopeful that the club will be able to sell some games and offer corporate lunches, raising some funds and attracting more numbers to enjoy the ambience of Farmers cricket in a unique and tranquil setting with its own clubhouse bar.
